What is Panhellenic?

NPC Panhellenic Creed

We, as Undergraduate Members of Women’s Fraternities, stand for good scholarship, for guarding of goodhealth, for maintenance of fine standards, and for serving, to the best of our ability, our college community. Cooperation for furthering fraternity life, in harmony with its best possibilities, is the ideal that shall guide our fraternity activities.

We, as Fraternity Women, stand for service through the development of character inspired by the close contact and deep friendship of individual fraternity and Panhellenic life. The opportunity for wide and wisehuman service, through mutual respect and helpfulness, is the tenet by which we strive to live.

College Panhellenic associations are established on campuses where there are at least two National Panhellenic Conference chapters. Each chapter has a delegation that attends weekly Panhellenic Council meetings. Panhellenic Councils exist to develop and maintain sorority life and interfraternal relations. They take part in all-sorority programming efforts, often promote superior scholarship, leadership development and dissemination of information important to women in general. The Panhellenic Council is the coordinating body for all sorority recruiting events.

National Panhellenic Conference

The Belmont Panhellenic Association is Belmont’s “all sorority council” -- a governing board for each of our 5 national sororities that are members of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) and National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC).

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

  • Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. founded on January 13, 1913 is a private, nonprofit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world.

These groups are listed separately as they come from very different historical contexts and have different cultures associated with them. NPHC organizations are culturally-based (historically African American) organizations.

Though NPHC has a different historical context, Delta Sigma Theta does not discriminate based on race for membership – there are no racial or ethnic qualifications for membership for any NPHC group. Delta Sigma Theta Inc. participates in a very different recruitment system than the four other NPC groups.

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)

National Panhellenic Conference and National Pan-Hellenic Council

Each of these organizations exist under an umbrella organization (governing council) at Belmont called the Panhellenic Association
